Where Were They Found?
The first albertosaurus was found in Alberta, Canada, which gave them their name. Three quarters of all bones found since have also been in Alberta. Albertosaurus remains have also been found in Alaska and New Mexico.
Not Quite a Giant
The Albertosaurus was big, but not nearly as big as the well-known Tyrannosaurus Rex. Though they are closely related species, the Tyrannosaurus was, on average, 8.4 metric tons compared to Albertosaurus’s 2 metric tons. Still a lot bigger than you, though!
The Hadrosaurus lived in North America during the late Cretaceous period. The fossil was originally found in New Jersey, USA where the Hadrosaurus became their state dinosaur. In 1858, William Parker Foulke discovered the first nearly complete skeleton of a Hadrosaurus, which became the first mounted dinosaur skeleton. The name Hadrosaurus comes from the Greek words “hadro”, meaning bulky or large, and “sauros”, meaning lizard.
The Pterosaur, name meaning “winged lizard”, was a flying dinosaur that lived during the late Triassic to the end of the Cretaceous period. Pterosaurs are very similar to birds, their bones are hollow and filled with air which allows them to fly. In fact, Pterosaurs are the earliest known species to have the ability to fly. The Pterosaur are more commonly called the “pterodactyl” even though they don’t belong in the genus, “Pterodactylus.”
The Tricerotops lived during the late Cretaceous period in modern North America. The Triceratops is most commonly known for its three horns on its face. In fact, its name literally translates to “three-horned face.” Its head made up one-third of its body and served as its primary line of defense. However, research suggests that the horns weren’t used for attacking enemies. Instead, they were used to attact mates and intimidate / defend against foes.
Eutheria, or “true beast”, is one of two mammal families that lived from the Early Cretaceous into possibly the late Jurassic period. ”Eutheria” is the term for the family of mammals that evolved down the ancestry line, not a specific name of an animal itself. Eutheria are the earliest mammals in its family tree, which branches and later evolves into a wide variety of organisms ranging from rodents, carnivora, and even primates.
The Beech Fern, or Phegopteris, is a species of fern that is commonly found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Also called the “Long Beech Fern”, they can be identified by their irregular patterns of compound leaves which sprout and grow from a main branch as they narrow to a point.
A frond is a large, divided leaf that is found commonly on plants such as ferns. Fronds are typically multiple-pinnated, meaning that there are multiple segments, called pinnae, extended from a stalk connected to the main stem of the plant. The pinnae can differ among ferns and some ferns are classified based on the type of pinnae they have.
The palm tree, or Arecaceae, are most common in tropical and subtropical areas, having over 2,600 different species. They can be identified by their tall, slender trunk with leaves sprouting from the top called “fronds.” Even throughout early history, palm trees have been cultivated because of their uses in foods, lanscaping and various products palm oil, coconuts, coir, sago, and palm wine.
A Cycad is a seed plant that has a sturdy trunk with multiple-pinnated leaves sprouting from the top. Cycads grow slowly and have very long lives, some living to be over 1,000 years old. Cycads closely resemble palm trees and ferns because of their types of leaves, but the groups are not related. Cycads are typically pollinated by a specific species of beetle, which during the process produces a neurotoxin called BMAA, which can then spread via the seeds to neighboring organisms.
The Norfolk Island Pine, or Araucaria Heterophylla, is a tree native and unique to Norfolk Island. They can grow to be 160-200 feet tall with symmetrical branches and awl-shaped leaves. Although the lumber from these trees are good quality, it was deemed unsuited for exporting and is used mainly by Hawaii.
